WHY ABSOLUTELY PURE WATER IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU.
Chemically pure water is dangorous to drink, according to the declaration of a number of French Navy surgeons who have been making careful investigations. After so much has been said during the last decade about tho danger of impure water, such a declaration sounds almost preposterous, yot these French Navy surgeons givo logical reasons why there is danger in drinking chemically pure water. To make water chemically pure it has to be distilled, and the continued \iso of distilled water as a beverage reduces the strength of tho physical organism because, while it is free from all germs, it contains nothing but ! oxygen and hydrogen. The mineral salts aroleft behind during the process of distillation, and tho mineral salto are really indispensable. "As long as life persists in tho body," these surgeons doqh\i;e,j "tho elimination of mineral salts goes on, ■'and this means tho rapid demineralisation of the organism." Domineralisation, it is explained, leaves ono'e system in such a state that tho natural tendency is to become tubercular. It was found that there wore numerous cases of tuberculosis among tho young sailors in the French Navy, and this was, after long investigation by tho surgeons of the Navy, attributed to the demineralisation of the organism by tho continual use of distilled drinking water, which is always used aboard the French warships. Tho distilled water was used in the belief that it was best for tho sailors, and tho naval authorities were anxious to make every condition as healthy as possible. Just now tho surgeons are studying tho best means' of treating tho distilled water used aboard the shipa with mineral matter. Of course, pure water is wanted, but as conditions aro now, it is held that ordinary drinking water would bo even better than tho chemically pure, if tho latter was responsible for the increase of tuberculosis in the Navy.
Few people continually drink chemically pure water, and for this reason tho dangers could not well bo learned until this discovery was mad©. There are a number of ways in which the gcrmc in water may bo eliminated and at tho same time the mineral salts loft in" the fluid. Distilled water is scarcely palatable at the best, as it is these very necessary mineral salts that make it really palatable. An effort is being mado to provide further proof of the dangers of chemically pure- water as maintained by the surgeons of the French Navy by means of experiments on animals.
