AUCKLAND MERCHANT ARRESTED.
CHARGED WITH MILITARY OFFENCE,
Something of a sensation has been created in Auckland by the news that a well-known citizen, Mr P. E. N. Gaudin, a member of the City Council, and late chairman of the City Schools Committee, is under military detention at Fort Cautley. No particulars are available, and the millt-* ary authorities refuse to make any statement. It is understood, however, that Mr Gam'in, who is a merabar of the firm of Kronfeld and Co., has been twice to the lalandu flinco the war broke out, and that on Monday evening he returned from Samoa aa a passenger on the s.s. Navua. On arrival, it is stated, Mr. Guudinwrs* tit once placed under arrest by the . I military authorities, nud conveyed to •'. j the fort, wher: li 3is at present under detention.
