After the Germans had been repulßed on the Ypreß Canal on Friday, the British advanced across the open fields, driving the enemy cußt und north, and capturing Langamarck, Where they were entrenched. During the night suddenly a shrill whistle sounded, bushes soaked with petroleum broke into flames, avd masses of raon sprang from beet crops a few hundred yards in advance. The British hurriedly manner! the trenches and opened lire with machine guns, pouring volley after volley. The Germans replied "Modi! Iloch!" and rushed on. They fell in hundreds, but were within thirty yards when the whistle sounded the retreat. Then the British sprang out of tho troncea with bayonete, and hand-to-hand encounters followed in the dim glare of tha burning bushes. Many of the en<nny threw down their arms, but no quarter was given, a>sd tho Germans were driven back to Roulers. The British took thousands of tho enemy prisoners, including a general, captured a battery, and many machine guns.
