WHEAT AND FLOUR.
THE QUESTION OP SUPPLIES. On tbs important subject, the Premier replied to uqestions in the House recently, that in acordance with the promise that he had made he had been ,in communication with the chairman of the Commission, who had arrived in Wellington that afternoon. Iri !all probability the Commission would take further evidence in Cbristchurcb, and possibly in some of the other southern centres. He admitted that the responsibility reated with the]j Government, but it wbb the duty of the Government, bo long as it had confidence in the Commission —and it had such confidence—to accept its recommendations. As whb stated a few dayß before, he had made enquiries from American merchants as to the price at which a minimum of 1000 tons.and a maximum of 4000 tons of floor could be supplied. He had received a reply that day stating that the c.i.f. price from Montreal was £ls 12s 6d a ton, and the Vancouver f.o.b. price £l3 7s 6d at on. He pointed out that • Australia was not likely to have any wheat ojr flour to spare this season, and be had been making every endeavour to encourage New Zealand farmers to grow more wheat. Therew as no doubt that if we did not grow enough for ourselves, flour would reach a price higher than any experienced for twenty years. The wheat that he had purchased in Australia would shortly be very uaeful in supplying imllers who were Bhort of stock's.
