ENGINEER'S REPORT. Since your last meeting practically all metalling contracts let have got under way, ;\nd good progrcßM is being made in every instance. Tho metalling this season baH commenced early, and there appears to be every chance of completing the contracts in hand, which total a length of over 40 miles. Already a distance of 52 miles hßs been completed. The following is the position of works under the items indicated Miroahuiao to Mntiere: On the contract recently let to L. Garmson for metallrg 011 this road, about 16 chains hag been completed. Mangakowhai Road: Tho crushing plant has been Bhifted from Aria and re-erected on this road, 25 chains already metalled. Mairoa Road: Lewis has now hiß quarries opened up and other preliminary work done. He expects to start metalling in the course of a few days. Kumaraßoad: Tendors which were invited by the chairman for 4CJ chains of dray road formation on this road were received on tho 26th ult., and the lowest, that of R. Edgar for £IOB 17a 6d, was accepted. Oniao Road: Tenderß were invited for 36J chains of horse rend formation on thia road, but only one tender was received and that wa3 above tho estimate. The contract was subsequently, let to D. Brady for £97. Mangaotalci Valley, lower: Moloney has practically completed his widening contract on thia rood, which extended a distance of 43J chains. I propose to metal a few of the worse places north of tho Mangaotaki bridge and put the road in order for summer carting us soon as possible. Pungarehu Road: Mr Tarry has now his crushing plant in position and a quantity of metal quarried. Ho expects to commence metalling in a few dayß. Mr InnoßS has also about 80 cubic yards of metal quarried for his contract on thia road. Waitei Road: Hoffman has just made another start with bis metalling contract on thia road. There is about 2£ miles yet to be done. Kotokotuku Road: About 50 chainß of dray road formation haß now been completed by McColl on his contract on this road Te KumiHangatiki: Nikora and party have now completed their dray road formation contract on this road, which extended a distance of one mile. The work has been well done. Mangaorino Road: Hoffman has Bhifted the crushing plant from Waitomo and has it re-erected for hia contract on this road. A start is now being made with tha crushing. Oamaru Road: Specifications have been approved by the Public Works Deportment for metalling about 18 chainn ont his road. The work will be commenced shortly. Hauturu to Otorohanga: Specifiationa hnve boon approved by the Public Works Depart ment for re-metalling a distance of 93 chains ilong the portion Known as Richardson's hill on this road. Tenders for the supply and delivery of the metal are now being invited. Mangatißoad: An engineering survey wide"ing about 60 chains on this road, near Pirongia, has been made during the month. Plans and specifications will be prepared as aoon as possible and submitted to the Public Works Department for approval in the usual way. Waihohounui Road: Tenders were invited by the chairman for 35 chains of horse road formation on this road, and the lowest tender that of Tu Nikora, for £65 9s, waß acceptd. Waipapa Road: Hickson hBS now completed the 34 chains of widening included in his contract on thia road, and is proneeding slowly with the metalling. Waipa River Bridge: Better progress has been made during the month with the approaches tu this bridge. The work will pronably be completed in four or five weeks. Otorohanga to Otewu: On this road Smythe and Mernin have practically completed their metalling contract which extended a distance of 25 miles. A start was made during the month by D. Turner on his metalling contract and about 30 chains has been completed. Rothery also made a start and completed over a mile of metalling. Otorohanga to Kio Kio: Smythe and Mernin made a start during the month with the metalling of the roads included in their contract, which extends a total distance of 7 miles 46 chains. About 50 chains has already been satisfactorily completed. The concrete culvert which is being put in to replace the old timber culvert on the Kio Kio road, is now nearly completed. —E. R.
