ENGINEER'S MONTHLY REPORT. Miiroahuiao to Matiere: A contract was let on this road a few months ago to L. Garmson, for the supply and delivery' of 650 cubic yards of metal for metalling a distance of about 35. chains. A start is now being made with the work. Mangakowhai: Most of the metal requited Co? this road has been quarried and crushing will commence immediately. Embankments have also been raised arid widened, and the road generally prepared for metalling.—Mairoa Road: Mr Lewis is now opening up ' quarries, getting stone, ana preparing to make a start v with his metalling contract on this road.—Mangautaki valley, lower: Good progress is being made by C. Maloney with his widening contract on this read. A distance of 30 chains has been complet-. Ed, leaving about 13& chains yet ti do.—Owen Road: Tne widening of this road, commencing at the Mokauiti bridge was started during the month, and a distance of about 15 chains has been completed.—Oniao Road: All the materials required for the bridge over the Pukeatua stream on this road are at the site and the erection of the bridge will tie started immediately. A contract for forming about 35 chains of iior3s road ha 3 been prepared and tenders for the wurk are now invited. —Kumara -Road: Plans, etc., have been prepared for ditching and forming a distance <S6J chains on tha lower end of. -/this road, and tenders to closs September 26th are now invited. —Maireßoad: C. DEvey. has just about completed bia widening contract on this road, which extended a distance cf 33 chains, A small contract let to E. Buckley, covering distance of 15 chains, has also been completed, Pungarahu Metalling: Mr Innes has now about 500 cubic yards of stone quarried in connection with bis contract on this road. Mr -Tarry is now getting his crushing plant through from Waitomo, and should be ready to commence metalling at an early date.—Waiteti Road: Mayes' contract for Widening this road, extending a distance of 61 chains, has been completed. In order to give dray road access to Spencer's section, a further distance of 75 chains was engineered, and plans of the work are iiOW being prepared. —Rotokotuku Road: About 30 chains of dray road formation was completed on this road during the month. The total length formed now is ona mile. —Te Kumi-Hangatiki: Nikora and party are doing good work un this road. They have now completed about 60 chains of dray road' formation.—Caves Road: The installing of this road with tha exception 01 a little trimming up is now completed. The total length of road is five miles 49 chains. —Otorohanga to Ctewa: Messrs Smyth and Mernin, whose metalling contract extends along the first 21 miles of .this read, Lava - now only about 3 chains to do. The ether contractors have not yet started, but intend to in a few days. Oamaru Road: Specifications have been prepared of a small metalling 'contract on this road and submitted to tha Public Works Department for approval. —Esauiuru to Otorohanga]: Specifications of a contract have been prepared for putting a little more metal on Richardson's Hill. On receipt of approvai from th 9 Public Works Department the tvork will be put in hand. —Waitoirc Valley Road: About 20 chains of tha dray road ? formation contract, recently Ist to T. D. Baillid on this road has been completed.'—Waips River Bridge: The work of forming the approaches to this bridge is elowly. the contractors having struck much harder material than was anticipated However, under tha circumstances, reasonably fair progress is being made. —Paro lioaa: On this road sear the Waitewhenua junction a large sft x 4ft culvert and embankment has been built. —Kio Kio Road: ■'A large 6ir. x 4ft timber culvert collapsed a faw days ago and is now being replaced by a good re-enfovced concrete culvert. —Kio Kio Metalling Scheme: The necessar? preparation of the roads for metalling included in this scheme, is now being mode. The contractors for tha metalling will ba ready to make a start in a few days.—Ouniwhsro Road: This road i 3 also being prepared for metalling.—General: The roads throughout the county are all in very fcK order. As iV3 have now got a new grader I propose shortly to get seme of the roads rounded up and put in good order for the summer. Timber has been ordered for the erection of bridge over the Mokauit; stream to give access to the quariy 0:5 tha MoksuOhura road near Aria. —ii'. R. Gould, Caunty Engineer.
