WAIMIHA-TANGITU ROAD.

COMPLETION OF WORK. APPRECIATED BY SETTLERS. Ths road between Wnimiha and Tangitu is an important artery in the roading scheme of the district, inasmuch as it gives access to the Tangitu block, an area which is closely settled chiefly by improved farm settlers. During ths initial stages of settlement the settlers and^ their families endured severe hardships in consequence of the state of the road which connects the settlement with the railway Waimiha. In response t~ the urgent representations of the settlers and others interested in the progress of the district the metalling of the road was undertaken by the Government about two years ago. At first the work was somewhat slow in progress, hut during the past year the metalling has been vigorously proceeded with and favoured with a fine winter the undertaking has just been completed by the Public Works Department. To commemorate the completion of the important work a social was organised by the settlers and the function wes held at Waimiha on Wednesday evening. In addition to the settlers present there were representatives oE the Public Works Department, teamsters, drivers and workmen. Visitors from Te Kuiti included Mesrss Smyth and Mora, Waitomo County Council; Boddie, Te Kuiti District Dairy Company; and a Chronicle representative. Apologies for absence were received from the Prima Minister, Mr C. K. Wilson, member tor the district, Mr A. Scholes, County chairman, and Mr Bfler, engineer to the Publi c Works Department. Mr E. A. Guilford presided over the social bosrd, and a most enjoyable evening was spent, the following toasts b?ing honoured: —''Local Bodies," Mr McBeth —Messrs Smyth, Mora, and Boddie; "Public Works Department." the chairman Messrs Roo r iey and Dunkley; "Visitors," Mr Middleton —Messrs Steeel and Morn; "Tea-n----stfre," Mr Middleton—Messrs Andrews and Warren; "Drivers," Mr Mcßeth—Messrs McG'ivan and Bratton; "Commercial Interests," Mr Stnpford — 1 Messrs McKay m:d O'Brien; "The Settlers." Mr Boddie —Messrs Carroll, R- Guilford and Coombridee; "The Ladi«a," Mr Warren—Mr Stops; "Press," Mr Mcßeth Mr Steel. During tha evening musical items werß well rendered by Messrs Marshall, Bsnflcy, BleaHel, Tiddleton, Denehy, and others, the function being concluded shortly before midnight, by Binging the National Anthem.
