THE BAXTER CASE
ACCUSED ON PROBATION At the Auckland Supreme Court on Wednesday tha jury in the case in which Thomas Langford was charged with theft and the misappropriation of moneys in connection with the running of a horse named Baxter . at the Auckland Trotting Club's autumn meeting, found the accused not guilty on the major charge of . misappropriating half the winnings, but that he had converted to his own use the £2 given to him to invest on'the.total" isator. On Thursday morning he 'was brought up for sentence,, and .Mr Stilling pleadssd for leniency on account of the fact that, except for indulgence in drinking, prisoner had held a good character. The judge placed the accused on probation for two years, and ordered hi on to pay £3o—£2s as restoration to the native and £5 to war is the costs —the money to be paid at the rate of £2 10s per month
