ADVANCES TO SETTLERS

OPERATIONS TO CONTINUE

A brief statement regarding the operations of the State-guaranteed Advances Department was made in the House of Representatives on Wednesday evening hy the Minister for Finance. Mr Allen said that the Department would not bo able to make large advances to settlers, but it intended to make provision for Bettiers requiring assistance in connection with the development of the country districts, and he thought bush-felling, aa suggested by Mr V. EL Reed (Kay of Islands), would be one of the qulifications for that preference. Advances to workerß for the erection of homes would bo continued. Mr Alton said he did not yet know whether loanß up to the full amount of £450 would ho granted. A recommendation had been received from the Advances Board that the maximum should be reduced tu £360, but that proposal had not yet be«n considered by the Cabinet. Information has been received by the local District Valuer, Mr H. A. Ellison, to the effect that the Advances Department will entertain applications to the amount of £SOO for advances to settlers for the purpose of effecting improvements. Advances to workers are also to be continued, but applications for amounts not exceeding £350 will receive preference.
