OTOROHANGA.

Own Correspondent. CHAMBER OP COMMERCE The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce waa held on Tuesday of last week, Mr Benner, president, was in the chair, and a good attendance of members was present. As a result of the motion carried at a previous meeting that no member of the Town Council could act on the Chamber's executive, Messrs Benner, J. and J. A. Orrasby tendered their resignations The opinion was that a grave mistake had been made in carrying the motion. After a lengthy discussion Mr Cook moved that an endeavour be made at next meeting to alter the original resolution to enable members of the Town Council to act in an official position on the Chamber's executive until next annual meeting. A letter waa read from Mr Fnrster who stated that if the members wno voted on the question were not financial, the carrying of the motion was not in order according to the rules of the Chamber. Kawhia railway matters were discussed, the opinion being that on account of the coal deposits, good land, easy grade, etc., from Otorohanga to Kawhia, some financial institution might be induced to construct the line; it was decided to keep the question in view for public action. It was decided to write to the Minister of Public Works, through Mr C. K. Wilson, re the result of trial surveys for Main Trunk to Kawhia railway. A member mentioned that numerous settlers in and to the north of Otorohanga would like to see a new county formed, extending from the Puniu river to Hansatiki. A committee was appointed to define boundaries and further go into the matter, and report at next meeting of the Chamber. It waa resolved to send a letter of sympathy to the treasurer, Mr W. H. Clayton, who has undergne a serious operation in the Hamilton Hospital. It was decided to write to the Post-master-General asking him to cloße afternoon mail at 6 p.m. instead of 5 p.m., also to request that the local telegraph office open from 7 to 8 each evening.
