PROPOSED LIGHT RAILWAY.
DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL INFORMATION TO BE OBTAINED The proposed light 'railway schema "which has been considered by the settlers in Paemako and Aria ridings of the County Council, was . advanced another step on Monday evening when a deputation consisting of Messrs Jackson, Daly, Verry, Lindsay and another was , introduced by Cr O'Dwyer to place matters in connection with the proposed railway before the Council. Cr O'Dwyer said the meeting held about a week ago decided it was advisable to adopt a steam railway and asked that the nece39ary steps Bhould be inaugurated with a view to having a line established. Mr Jackson said he understood an area had to be established and a proper scheme outlined. He was not conversant with the actual procedure. What they wished to know was whether the Council would undertake the work if a feasible scheme was produced The chairman said he had gone into the question, and many things had to be considered. For instance, they had to undartake the business of common carriers, and in the event of accident action might be taken against • the Council which would, perhapß, ruin the ratepayers. There were many points to ba considered, both from the point of view of the Council and of the ratepayers. As far as he had gone he could not say he was Bgreeable to the suggestion, but he would like to get a good deal more information concerning the responsibilities incurred. Cr O'Dwyer said they had discussed all the possible ways, and the settlers were influenced in deciding to go in for steam by the fact that as the chairman had suggested such a line could be worked in with the general railway scheme of the country. As to an electrical railway they had another engineer's report on the power at the Wairere Falls, and as to coat the reports ware virtually the same, but the last report was to the effect that one thousand horse nower would be sufficient for the line. However, with respect to the railway what was desired was that the Council should be getting information. The chairman said he Was going to Wellington next week, and would endeavour to get what information he could with respect to the probable cost of the route already surveyed ny the Government. A good deal would have to be done by those promoting the line before the project could be placed before the ratepayers.
