ROADING REQUIREMENTS.

PERMANENT ROADS WANTED EXTENSIVE METALLING SCHEMES : Some idea of the amount of -work being carried out in the district in the shape of metalling is to be ob-: tained from a return furnished by Mr E.. R. Gould, engineer to the Waitomo County Council, to the Public Works Department. The return only desls with that portion of ite Couuty included in the Te Kuiti - ; ruad district, the northern portion of the County being under the control of the Auckland road district. The roads dealt with, therefore, are only those to the west and south of Te Kuiti* Contracts have been let for the Pungarehu road, 6 miles 70 chain; Maire road, \\ miles; Mairoa South, 2| miles; Mangakowhai, 1J miles; Mangaorino, 3f miles of which one mile has been completed. In addition to the foregoing loan proposals are in hand for the Ngapaenga metalling s:heme which provides for 9 miles of metal, and the Kie Kie metalling scheme which includes a total distance of about 15 miles of metalling on the Kie Kie, Paraheka and Kumara roads. It will thus be seen that new Work to the extent of over 16jmiles of metallinglhas been let to contractors, while a further 24 miles should be placed in hand early in the season. When it is coisidersd that some extensive schemes are in hand both in the northern and eastern portions of the County will be realised that coming season will be an extremely busy one as far as metalling is concerned. In the Otorohanga district contracts have been let for the Kio Kio metalling scheme, 8 miles; Ouruwhero, 5 miles; and Otewa, 7 miles; making a total of 20 miles just being started while schemes are in hand for metalling a further 3 miles at Kio Kio; 9 mile 3at Kawa, and 4 miles, from Otorohanga to Puketawai or a total of 16 miles in that district. These totals amount to 36 miles for which contracts have already been let in the County, and including the Mangaotaki scheme,: a futher distance of 52 miles of metalling for which arrangements are in hand.
