MAORIS AND SCHOOL.
NON-ATTENDANCE OF CHILDREN TRUANT OFFICER'S PROSECUTIONS. The neglect of Maori parents to send their children to school was referred to in Cpurt yesterday when Mr Small, Truant Inspector for the Education Board, prosecuted natives at Fio Fio and Hangatiki for failing to send their children to school. Mr Rawson expressed surprise at the Maoris failing to take advantage of the opportunity to have their chilren educated. Mr Small said ne found the Maoris neglectful in this reßpect generally, particular in regard to the girls. The parents appeared to consider it not necessary for the girls to receive schooling. In the case of a Maori named Nui at Pio Pio, a girl ot 10J years, was very intelligent, but the parents refused to send her to school. A fine and costs totalling £3 8s 4d was indicted. In the case of Taituha, at Hangatiki, two charges were laid and fines and costs amounting to £2 19a 4d in one case and £1 17b in the other were inflicted. The Truant Inspector remarked if the parents persisted in keeping the children from school further proceedings would have to be taken
