Ninety American refugees escaped aboard the Cetriana, a British steamer, while an angry Mexican mob at Mazanillo, a port on the west coast, threatened to board the vessel and sink her at the wharf.

They actually attempted to mine her, dynamite being placed beneath a Mexican steamer laden with inflammable material, which anchored 10ft from the Cetriana.

opportunity to escape. A report from the American commander at Vera Cruz states that the Mexicans, who aru advancing towards the coast, have blown up the InterOceanic railway bridge, 28 miles from Vera Cruz, spanning the Antigau river.
