' It is understood that its likeljf that the scope of the negotia-i tiona will ,be widened in order to include tha best means of pacifying Mexico,
Ninety American refugees escaped aboard the Cetriana, a British steamer, while an angry Mexican mob at Mazanillo, a port on the west coast, threatened to board the vessel and sink her at the wharf.
They actually attempted to mine her, dynamite being placed beneath a Mexican steamer laden with inflammable material, which anchored 10ft from the Cetriana.
Lieut. Minstsr, of the British Naval Reserve, manoeuvred ths Catriana out of danger as the American warship Raleigh arrived. Aa the Cetriana was leaving, the Mexicans despatched a steamer with the apparent intention of ramming the Getriana, but the escape of convicts aboard the Mexican vesssi, and ths necessity for recapturing them after they had been forced aft by a rifle fusilade, gave the Cetiiana an
opportunity to escape. A report from the American commander at Vera Cruz states that the Mexicans, who aru advancing towards the coast, have blown up the InterOceanic railway bridge, 28 miles from Vera Cruz, spanning the Antigau river.
