A COUNCIL'S RESPONSIBILITY.
SNOWDEN v. WAITOMO COUNTY „ / COUNCIL. APPEAL DECIDED UPON. In connection with the casa in which T. Snowdon waß awarded £3OO damages against the Waitomo County Council for the loss of a hand through a detonator explosion and in which a new trial was recently re fused, ths matter of taking the case fo the Appeal Court came before the Council on Morday evening. The chairman said that Mr J. It. Raed, K.C., who was acting for the Council, suggested getting a further opinion on the question of appealing. The chairman wished the Council to come to a decision on the matter 60 that Mr Reed could be advised without delay. Cr Were proppsed and Cr Johnston seconded, that Mr J. R. Reed, K C., be requested to obtain counsel's opinion as to the advisability of appealing against the judge's decision in the case Snowdon v. the County Council. Cr Johnston said a most regrettable accident and was deplored by everyone. At the sam 9 time a very important principle was at stakf, and it seemed to him it was the duty of the Council to see tba matter through. He knew of detonators being found on roads ori whicto no explosives had been used. The matter was one of grave responsibility, and it should be thoroughly tested. The chairman said he agreed it was a serious responsibility, and he wished to know if the Coucnil was unanimous on the matter. The motion was carried unanimously.
