THE GENERAL ELECTION.

THE MASTERTON SEAT,

[by tklkgbaph.—pbkss association.] Maaterton, Friday.

Though Mr G. R. Sykes has been selected as Government candidate for the Master ton seat at tne general election, it is probable that another Government supporter, Mr A, H. Herbert, who contested the seat at the last election, will again be a candidate. A number of Reformers are of opinion that Mr Herbert has a better chance of holding the seat than Mr Sykes, and are consequently using every effort to get him to come forward. One Government supporter informed a reporter that Mr Herbert was almost sure to con test the seat,-and that he would receive substantial support. No definite announcement has yet been made es to who will h'a the Liberal candidate. It is stated that Mr Hogg's family do not wish him to again stand, aa tie has not been enjoying the ba3t of healb, and a political camrjaign would be a severe strain on him. Those who profess to be in Mr Hogg's confidence state that the exmember will again come forward. If Mr Hogg does not stand there will be no lack of LiSerir candidates, as "no less than five men are said to be willing to offer their services. Tnev are all good men, any of whom will, command strong support, and the difficulty will be to make a choice from them in the event of Mr Hogg not standing.
