KIRITEHERE-MOEATOA.

Own Correspondent,

The isolation of the district has been the cause of many seriious drawbacka in the progresi of settlement. The long distances away from established

centres over bad roads has long been a matter of serious concern especially

in the event of accident or sickness. Mr J. Wouldes has bepn working in the direction of forming a medical club for the district for some time. He has succeeded in joining forces with the settlers of South Kawhia for the purpose of having a medical man resident on the southern shores of the harbour. The position is that £lls has to be found annuallv by the settle! s and others, £SO of which has been allocated as the portion of the Marokopa - Kiritehere - Moeatoa district. With the object of making a start on a practical basi9 Mr Wouldes organised a basket sodal in aid of the project, which took place at Maiokopa on Friday evening when there was a large and enthusiastic attendance. There was spirited competition for the large number of ladies' baskets offering, Miss Willison's realising £3 15s, top price. The medical fund will benefit to the extent of £l6 7s Gd as the result, df the function, and Mr Wouldes' zealous efforts. The balance of the contribution will he easily made up from the sale of members' tickets. It is understood that Dr Campbell Jenkins, who ha? b.en practising his profession in Kawhia for a number of years will be the chosen medical man in charge of the new club. Ton through telephone communication with Te Kuiti is proving a source of considerable convenience to settlers. As the greater part of the line is. practically new, and all the instruments of pood type communications are very distinct. The lire is a very pleasant one to do business over. The suwing of bush burns in the district is now almost complete and settlers are hopefully looking forward j to good takes of grass. This year's operations will mean a considerable increase to the pastures of the district. Information ia being sought in regard to a Defence Rifle Club at Marokopa. The Defence Department has intimat9d that the officer commanding the Auckland district has been instructed to forward all details.
