On th 9 evening of March sth, a social and dance was held in the new school, Lower Waitomo, hy way of celebrating its opening. Dancing and card playing were indulged in by a large gathering of both sexes and songs and recitations were given at intervals. Mr G. C. Phelan, the schoolmaster, to whose untiring efforts the success < f the evening was largely due, mr-t given great credit for the way i 1 which everything passed off. An excellent supper, pro/ided by the ladie3 of the district, was harded round at 10.30, after which dancing commenced again and was kept up until a late hour. Now that we have got our mair road metalled and shrill be able to travel with a certain amount of comfort in the winter it is intended to hold socials and dances at intervals in the new school right through the winter. The shortage of sheep trucks has been severely felt in this d strict. No less than 27 were ordered for a recent fair and out of that number only five were supplied, and in consequence great loss and inconvenience has been felt. This shortage trouble saems to crop up more or less every autumn, but tnis year it has been more proponent than usual. I
