THE AMERICAN MARKET.

FOR AUSTRALASIAN PRODUCE A GROWING DEMAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. —CopyrigUi Sydney. Monday. Mr Meres, manager of the Coastal Farmers' Co-operative Society, returned from tour to America and Canada, the object of which was the establishment of butter export arrangements on similar lines to those in Britain. He is convinced tbat both countries offer splendid auxiliary markets, for the continued increase of population, without a corresponding advance in production, has created a serious shortage in the autumn and winter. As compared with Britain. Canada and America offer special advantages to producers, including a short sea journey and sales direct to retailers, while the legislation on ecl- j cured margarine gives butter due | protection. I New Zealand, under reciprocal tariff ' agreements with Canada and a subsidised steamer service, will this season ship over 4000 tons. In both countries the atuumn and winter shortage is met by a speculative shortage of summer supplies, out a large influx of high grade New Zealand butter into Canada and the reduction in the American duty will check this. There is increasing room for Australian butter irom November to March. In the Argentine and Siberia the * igher values ruling for wheat and wool prevent the encroachment of the dairying industry, while in New Zealand the increased prices for cheese are keeping the production in check. Compared with Victoria and New Zealand, the appearance of the New South Wales boxes is highly detrimental to the sales. ;
