HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE,

The High Commissioner's cable, dated February 28th, is as follow?, quotations unless otherwise specified, being average market prices on spot: Mutton. —North Island 4id r light weight as high as dgd. Dull sale for heavy carcases of mutton at 4|d.
Lamb. Fair demand for better grdes at reduced mice; other than Canterbury 6 5 16d, but 6gd can be obtained for very hest quality. Beef. —Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light. The market remains fi:m. Hindquarters 4-Jd, fores 4d. Supplies of American chilled beef are large. Hinds SJ--1, fores 4d.
Butter. —The market is firmer. New season's Siberian butter is on the market. Danish 123s to 1265; New Zealand more business doing 114s to 116s; exceptionally choice 118s; Australian and Siberian market steady 110s to 114s; Argentine 110s to 1123
Cheese. —The market is quiet, but steaady. CBndian white 69s to 71s; coloured 70s to 725; New Zealand white 63s 6d to 64s 6d, coloured 65s Gd to 675; Australian, white 645, coloured 665. Hops.—The market is steady, with very good demand. Wool. —The market is stronger, especially for crossbred, which is very firm. STOCK SALES. The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., report:— MATIERE SALE. At Matiere, we held a special sheep sale. We yarded 5757 sheep, and sold all but a few pens at prices equal to Waikato sales —viz., fat and forward wethers 17s 3d to 17s 6d, 4 and 6 tooth wethers 15s 9d to 16s 2d, 2 tooth wetherq 13s 6d to 15s, 2 tooth ewes 14s to 15s Id, f.f.m. ewes lis 9d to 12s Bd, aged ewes 7s 6d to Bb, shorn lambs 7s 6d to 8s lOd. TE KUITI SALE. On Friday, at Te Kuiti, we had a yarding of 5629 sheep and 587 cattle. Competition was keen for sheep, but there was little demand fo cattle We quote:—Fat wetherslßs to 19s 6a, fat ewes 15s 4d to 16a 6d, fat ewes and wethers, woolly 21s 3d, 2 tooth ewes 14s 3d to 15s, 2 tooth wethers 14s 4d, 4. 6 and 8 tooth ewes 13s 7d to 15s Id, s.ra. ewes 10s to 12s lid, good shorn lambs 7s lOd to 8s 6d, cull lambs 3a to 5s Id, Lincoln rams lgn to ljgns, Leicester rams 2gns. Cattle: Fat cows £5 2s 6d to £6, 2§ to year steers £4 19s to £5 7s. 18 months to 2 year steers £3 13s to £3 17s 6d, calves 25s to 27s 6d. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd., report:— HAMILTON SALE. At Hamilton we submitted 750 sheep, mostly fat ewes and lambs, 56 fat cattle, 248 stores and 55 pigs. A good number of buyers present required stock of all classes, and we report a most successful sale, and satisfactory prices throughout. We quote:—Small fat steers £7 12a 6d, heavy fat cows £7 lis to £8 10s, lighter weights £5 5s to £6, fat heifers £4 18s, empty fresh to forward cows £3 18s to £4 15s, store cows £3 to £3 13s, calves 29s to 365, fat ewes 15s 2d to 16s 3d, fat wethers 18s 2d, fat 2 tooth ewes 17s, woolly iambs 9s lud to 12s 6d, shorn lambs 6s lOd to 10s 3d, porkers 27s to 40s, slips 15s 6d to 18n. Newton King's report?:— KAPONGA SALE. On February 20th at Kaponga, for mv monthly cattle sale and annual weaner fair, I had a very good entry and attendane, good conditioned cows and bulls sold very readily. Vendors' reserves on weaners were in most cases much abovo buyers' limits, but in every case where sellers' were prepared to meet the market I was able to clear at prices which on recent sales must be considered satisfactory. Prices were:— Weaner steers 10s to 33 6d. weaner bulls 31s to 435, mixed weaners 12s to 335, weaner heifers 5s to 43a 6d, bulls £Bs 6d to £3 16s, in-calf heifers £4 9s, small store cows or aged 32s 6d to £3 Bs, good store cows £3 18s to £4 ss, forward cows £4 12s to £5 14s for good conditioned cows, good fat eows £6 9a to £7 10s. On February 24th, at my Rahotu yards, considering the wet weather, I had a fair entry of which I cleared everything as follows: Weaner steers 22s to 33s fid, weaner heifers 15 3, mixed weaners 255, good line of well grown 18 months steers £3 16s, 15 and 18 months steers, rough £2 'l7s to £3 3s, bulls £3 10s to £6, store cows £3 8s 6d to £3 18s, forward cows £4 15 to 6d £5 15s.
