MANGAPEHI.

VALEDICTORY SOCIAL
A farewell social, tendered to Mr and Mr* Hayson, was held in the local hall on Friday evening leat. Mr Hayson has just completed hiß ninth year as headmaster of the Mangapehi school, and has deservedly earned his promotion to assistant-master at the Bayfield sehcol, Heme Bay. Lccal residents turned out in force to bid ; farewell to the departing couple, dancing commencing at S p.m. and continuing until the early hour 3 of the morning the music being supplied by Mr and Mrs Lichtwark, piano and violin, and was all that could be desired. During the evening Mr J. Gray, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr and Mrs Hayson with a handsome case of carvers (three sets) and a silver flower stand. The Football Club showed its appreciation of Mr Hayson's services as late secretary, referee, etc , by the gift of a silver-mounted ink stand, whilst the Tennis Club presented him with a silver sovereign case suitably eneraved Mr Hayson was alio the recipient of a very useful dressing case from his scholars. Representing the natives, Mr Tewi te Aurere expressed regret at the departure of Mr and Mrs Hayson from Mangapehi, and wished them all success and good luck in their new home Three cheers were then called for and heartily given. Mr Hayson suitably responded. Mr McGrath, of Tairua, has been selected to fill the position of headmaster in place of Mr Hayson, but pending th« adjustment of the usual red tape difficulty usually evident in connection with Government departments, a relieving teacher, Mr Willis, has been appointed. TENNIS. The tennis B team to represent Mangupehi against Te Kuiti B on Saturday next, March 7ch, will be selected for the following: —H. Brumby, D. Seymour, M. Charteris. H. Beckott, F. Soner.A. F. Hercus and F.W. Wilson. Providing the fine weather continues aoma good contests should result. This will be the first time the Mangapehi Club will have the pleasure of playing a Te Kuiti team on the home courts. ATHLETIC SPORTS. The main topic of conversation _at present among the sporting section ia the forthoming sports meeting to be held in the recreation ground on Saturday, March 14th. The committee ha* been busily engaged in getting the ground into good order and a good meeting is anticipated. Nominations are coming in freely both locally and from outside districts. Quite a number of local choppers and runners are entering, thus ensuring more local interest. Intending competitor*" iire reminded that nominations close with the secretary, Mr 11. R. Brumby, this evening, but late nominations accompanied by an extra fee of Is 6d for each event, will he accepted up to March 9th. ANGLING. Local fishermen are giving the wily trout a "breather" at present, the water being very low and clear owing to the dry spell of weather. Some fine trout are to be had, however, in the upper reaches of the Waimiha river at Tiroa, some scaling 121b in weight. It ia a matter for regret that the King Country Acclimatisation Society does not. endeavour to have the uaual reserve made along the banks of this river so that license holders could fish untroubled. At present the natives resent the appearance of outside fishermen and threaten legal proceedings for trespass against in truders. As this could be made one of the best fishing rivers in the King Country anglers would gladly support any move made by either the King Country Acclimatisation Society or the Auckland body. TRVDE IMPROVEMENT. Trade now seems to be on the improve, and Messrs Ellis and Burnand's mills are kept going at their full capacity. The daily output in about 38,000 feet super, whilst the timber railed daily averages from 25,000 to 30,000 feet super., when the supply of trucks permit. Owing to the increased traffic of late great difficulty has been experienced in procuring sufficient rolling stock to cope with orders.
