Mr A. E. Moore, postmaster, has been appointed registrar of births, deathß, and marriage, Mr J. Tammadge having resigned from the position. The Labour Department, in an attempt to cope with the demand for temporary labour in the fruit and hop industry,, has seized upon a very good idea—that of inducing town dwellers to do this class of work as holiday recreation. Wellingtonians have been officially invited to consider the attractions of a few weeks in the healthful, sunny climate of Nelson, and a job hop picking at the rate of 2£d a bushel. This is said to provide a gqod return for amateur pickers. Thirty women have already been selected by the women's "employment branch to go to the end of next week, and it is expected that several hundreds will take up the work when the growers are ready. Care is being taken to select only people of a good class, so that the semi-holiday idea is not spoiled, and similar precautions are being taken regarding the employers, who must also possess a good record if they 'are to readily get labour of this tpye. The Department expects, after this season's experience, to make an arrangement with the Nelson and Motueka fruit and hop growers to supply all the extra assistance wanted during the busy season.
