THE MEXICAN MURDER.
FULL SATISFACTION PROMISED.
BRITAIN TAKING ACTION.
London, Monday.
The Daily Mail has received a cable from General Villa stating: —"An English subject, Benton, was put to death because he went into my room and pulled out his revolver to kill me.
"When the time comes for the trial it will be open, and I will give full satisfaction to the British people." Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, in reply to a question, said that previou3 to Mr Benton's execution the United States had impressed on the Mexican Government the importance of respecting the lives and properties of Europeans. The fact that tlie Foreign Office was communicating with the United States did not imply any British responsibility. He communicated with the United States because the latter alone could exercise influence in Mexico to get justice done. He did not imply any American responsibility.
Sir Edward Grey added that the American Consul at Juarez stated that Villa explained that Mr Benton was court-martialled and shot for plotting to assassinate him.
