WAITOMO CAVES.

Own Correspondent.

Most of the settlers around who had felled bush were fortunate in getting good burns on the whole, and many have now got their turnips sown and are commencing to sow grass seed. Favoured by the hot weather of January the farmers on the Hangatiki road have been busy cutting and stacking their hay crop, and some fairly large areaß got safely under cover will help to provide extra feed for a large number of stock during winter.

Some very promising fields of swede turnips are to be seen around and the teams are now busy getting the land ready for soft turnips. Three metalling contracts are now being carried on and should we be favoured with a fine autumn there is every likelihood that the metalling scheme from Hangatiki to the Hauturu road, and the Ruakuri Caves, will be completed before winter sets in. The new school at Lower Waitomo has heen completed and is now in use, which is a boon to both teacher and scholars. Not many sheep have gone out to the sales this time, there being an active local demand owing to the large amount of new country which is being brought into occupation each year. The dairymen report a very successful seaaon so far, and state that up to the present there has scarcely been any reduction in the quntity of cream sent awav.
