CHILD DROWNED AT MAHOE.
Kawhia, Monday. A drowning accident occurred at Mahoe, a tidal river on the Kawnia Harbour on Saturday evening, which resulted in the death of the three-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Garfield Dent. The homestead is situated on the banks of the river. When the little fellow was missed in the afternoon a careful search was made nearjthe water, and footprints detected. The Kawhia police and a doctor were ; telephoned for immediately, and the search was continued until about midnight, when the bodywas found on the opposite side of the river. An inquest was held before Mr-W. J. Shaw (district coroner). The father deposed that the child was with him at milking time, and he saw him going towards the house. About 6.30 p.m. the child was seen by a native.on the river bank. Dr Jenkins made an examination of the body, and found that death was due to asphyxia. A verdict was returned in accordance with the, medical testimony. The greatest sympahty is expressed on all sides for the parents, who reside at Mahoe, in their bereavement. The burial took place in Auckland.
