SPORTING.

TE KUITI RACES. The forthcoming race meeting at Te Kuiti promises to eclipse all previous records in the matter of sport, and preparations for the meeting are well forward. Work is proceeding on the course, and within the next few days the track should be in excellent condition. A day's good rain would be decidedly beneficial at present as the ground has become rather hard in places. Arrangements have been made for the running of a special train from Auckland on race day. The train will leave the city about 6.30 a.m., arriving at the course about noon, and departing from Te Kuiti about 6.40 p.m. It is anticipated thi3 will attract a considerable numbe* of race followers who would otherwise be prevented from attending. It will also operate in the direction of making the matter of accommodation easier, and the tax on the boarding houses will be less Bevere.

The nominations received for the various event 9 are highly satisfactory The aggregate is not so large as that of last year, but the more important events have drawn larger entries and the class of horses competing should be up to a high standard. The weights for the various events will be declared by the handicappar, Mr R. Wynyard, on Saturday, next, January 17th.
