The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday night. Present —Messrs Whyte, president, Willis. Kidson, Benner, Jt'hillips, Worthington, J. A, Ormsby. Green, McDonald, Claridge, Bell, Rhodes, Hnsking, Isaacs, and F. Forster, hon. sec.
The prenident congratulated Mr Kidson on hia re-appearance after his illness.
On the proposition of the president the secretary was empowered to receive subscriptions in the absence of the treasurer.
It waß resolved to draw the attention of" the Rs hvay Department to the dangerous state of the crsssing near Mr Burncrd's residence, caused by a hedge grc.ving parallel with the railway.
The secretir y was instructed to write to the po tal authorities pointing out that l.' e subscribers to the telephone exchange had now reached the required ! umber which entitled them to have thi exchange open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. instead of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as at present, and to ur;:e the Department to have the change made in the near future.
Mr J. Phillips' proposal, seconded by Mr Worthington, that this Chamber get up a petition of ratepayers request the Town Council to take a poll on the question of having the system of rating on unimproved values brought into force in Otorohanga, was, after a long discussion, carried unanimously. The president, and Messrs Green and Phillips were appointed a committee to take the petition in hand and forward it to the Town Council as soon as possible.
The following figures are inl erupting:—The capital value of the town is £69,077, unimproved value £42,710, value of improvements £2(\3 ( '~. The present rate of 3Jd in the £ en the capital value produces £924 3s 2d, whereas s«d in the £ on the unimproved value would produce .Wo'.) 17s 3d. GENERAL. A special meeting of (ho Otorohanga Town Council was held on Monday when the striking of a general rate of one penny farthing was confirmed on the proposition of Cr V'icary. seconded by the chairman, Mr Elliott. Mr W. Bowling's tender at 2s 5d per y3rd for metalling Haerehuka and Te Kawa streets, also Maniapoto street, was accepted, work to commence of after the holidays.
