An international diplomatic conference has been suggested for the amicable settlement of the controversy between Britain and the United States over the question of Panama Canal tolls by Mr Hannis Taylor, former United Stateß Minister to Spain. Mr Taylor disagrees with the view of. Mr J. H. Ghoate that America should repeal the obnoxious clauie in the Panama Act or submit the case to arbitration. He considers both methods impracticable. The secretary of the Australian Swimming Union has received a cable stating that private business will prevent Duk" Khanamoku from visiting Australasia. The news will be a big disappointment to swimmers throughout Australasia, who were eagerly looking forward to the visit of the world-famed Hawaiian. A gentleman who claimed to be able to speak with some authority Informed a Naoier reporter that the Hon. Robert McNab would be the Opposition candidate for the Hawke's Bay seat at the next general election. It is stated that Mr McNab was interviewed when he wan in Hastings, and viewed the proposal in a favourable light. Mr McNab was offered the Hawke's Bay seat prior to the last general election, but preferred to stand for Palmerston North, where ho met with defeat.
