King Country Chronicle Wednesday, Dec. 10th, 1913 THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.
The motion introduced by Cr Martin at the last meeting of the Borough Council in connection with the sanitation of the borough opens up a question which is likely to be kept prominently before ike people for some time to come. It lis recognised that any ex-tc-iT-ie,;-. in ;be drainage system already im-tnlled will be a costly item, and (he rat. payors have already a big iiiihiity io face in the matter of rateß. At tiie p:iino time the public health is >( first consideration and no question of cost should stand in the way of making every reasonable provision to that v\m\. There can he no question hut Unit <ho members of the Council nro keenly alive to the importance of sanitation and the provision already 1 made to fill the requirements in that direction is as much as could be expected. At the same time it is obvious that the natural features of the town will necessitate an extensive drainage system at the earliest possible time. Difficulties are continually arising in respect to the matter which can only be satisfactorily overcome by the installation of a proper system, but the financial aspect of the question at present is such that the undertaking of a comprehensive scheme would be an inordinate burden on the ratepayers. In the meantime (he Council is doing all in it? power io moot the position, and the \-p.C, that the town occupies quch a hmh pennon among the clean townsof the nonunion is an indication that the tii'orijj of tho public body are well directed.
