AWAKINO COUNTY COUNCIL.
ANNUAL MEETING. The first annual meeting of the above council was held at Waitanguru at noon on Wednesday last. There were present Crs Leech, Boddy, Thoms, Kelly, Old and Patterson. The business of electing the chairman for the ensuing year was first proceeded with. It was moved by Crs Kelly and Patterson that Gr Leech be again elected chairman. Cr Old moved that Ct Boddy b elected. Gr Boddy refused to stand and in doing so commented upon the excellent work done by Cr Leech since the county became operative. There being no other nominations Cr Leech was duly declared elected chairman. On the motion of. Crs Kelly and Boddy it wbb resolved that in future the Council meet at 6 p.m. on days to be advertised later to transact the ordinary busines of the county. An ordinary meeting was held at the close of the annual meeting, the same councillors being present, with Gr Leech as chairman. The Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce wrote urging that the backblo<*k counties take co-operative action to induce the Goverment to take over the main arterial roads, arid asking for the council's views on this subject.—On the motion of Crs Leech and Boddy it was resolved that "In the opinion of this Council it is necessary, as a matter of equity, the Government should, when framing the Local Governent Bill, provide the necessary machinery to make and maintain all main arterial roads out of Consolidated revenue, or to ensure a sufficient annual payment to local bodies to enable them to make and maintain these roads without undue handicap on thesettlers in the several districts. On the motion of Cr; Kelly and Patterson it was resolved that a copy of the above resolution be forwarded to the Te Kuiti ChaAiber of Commerce advising that a meeting of delegates of councils of the Dominion be called to discuss the best means of maintaining main arterial roads oat of consolidated revenue. Marokopa Township. —Crs Faterson and Kelly moved that the roads as shown on the plan of the Marokopa township proposed to be dedicated by the Marokopa Milling Company in favour of the Awakino County Council be taken over by tha Council. Crs Boddy and Old moved as an amendment that the Council first take legal advice to ascretain whether the Councilman compel the Marokopa Milling Company to metal the roads before the Council takes them over. The amendment waß carried, Crs Boddy, Old, and Thoms voting for, and Crs Kelly and Paterßon against. On the motion of Crs Old and Kelly it was resolved that the chairman be paid £ls 16s to defray expenses incurred whilßt travelling on County business.
