DIVORCE IN NEW ZEALAND.

A DECIDED INCREASE

More petitions for divorce were received, and more decrees issued by the New Zeaalnd courts last year than in any previous period. There were 274 petitions and 222 decrees for dissolution of marriage were granted, the latter being 61 in excess of the total for the previous year. Two judicial separations wera granted, and there were four successful applications to declare unallity of marriage. The article in an advance section of the New Zealand "Year Book," from which these figures are taken, states the Act of 1989 has evidently operated in the direction of increasing largjely the number of petitions and decrees for dissolution of marriage or judicial separation. The proportion of petitions and decrees for dissolution of marriage to the number of marriages as up till 1898 higher in a New Zealand than in England and Wales, but lower than in New South Wales or Victoris. The full effect of the operation of the new law in New Zealand is now, however, being experienced.
