KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Kawhia County Council w«s held on 13th in St., the following were present —Crs W. J. Shaw (chairman), Babbage, Noonan, Kearns, Davies, Perham and Norton. CORRESPONDENCE.

The Chief Surveyor forwarded plan of road to be taken along the foreshore, Kawhia Harbour.—Received. The Chief Surveyor stated that he could not see hia way to allow th« proposed road deviation through Mr W. A. Mason's property as the proposal would have the effect of lengthening the distance from certain Crown lands to Kawhia —lt was resolved to point out to the Chief Surveyor that the necessary formation would be shortened.

The Under-Secretary, Lands Department, promised that careful attention would be paid to the matter of reserving suitable school sites in the opening up of new blocks. The Minister of Railways wrote that the question of the adoption of a means of minimiHing the risks at level crossings would bo carefully gone into. Offers of grants for the Awaroa to WaiharakeKe and Kinohaku to Waiharakeke roads were received from the Public Workß Department—lt was decided to accept theße grants. The Minister of Public Works promised to consider the making of a grant for forming the road to Kiwi Bay landing when preparing the Estimates.

The Public Works Department, advised that the Government is unable to reconsider its decision to hand portion of the Okupata-Pekanui road over to the Council.

Whangarei Borough Council stated'that it is taking steps to obtain a declamatory judgment on the question of the action of the StateGuaranteed Advances Ofßce raising the rate of interest on loans after such loans are granted. The object ib to see whether the Government can, after agreeing to lend money at a certain rate, by authority of Act of Parliament, break its agreement and raise the rate.

Mr G. H. Chase applied for permission to lay a tram line from the wharf to his store.—Granted subject to the approval of the engineer. The engineer's report was read and adopted. It was resolved to request the Minister of Public Works to empower the assistant-engineer at Hamilton to approve all plant! submitted to him by the Council and generally deal with most of the business in connection with the county, thus dispensing with the delay in transacting business with the department through the district engineer at Auckland.—lt was decided to ask the other County Councils interested to support (his request.
