COUNTY BOUNDARIES.

A further eign of progress in the district is afforded by the fact that the Waitomo County Council is taking steps to adjust the boundaries of the 1 various county ridings. The boun- ; daries originally fixed when the county ' was brought into operation have been 1 necessarily altered in the past when \ the Ohura County was formed, but beyond that the original boundaries have i remained unaltared. In the meantime settlement has rapidly increased and country has been brought into cultivation that a year or two ago was lying waste. The most noticeable additions to settlement are the Tangitu and Rarfgitoto districts. The former has hitherto been incorporated in the Aria riding, but at) the district is sufficiently large and as the community of interest between Tangitu and Aria is slight it will probably be necessary to establish a separate Tangitu riding. The land of that locality is chiefly Crown land held under close settlement, and the road mileage of the district is very considerable, while the natural outlet is to the railway at Waimiha. The Rangitoio district which'is chiefly in the Otorohanga and Hangaliki ridings,[is rapidly becoming settled and a distribution of the district between the two ridings will probably be made. In addition there is a portion of the West Taupo County which naturally finds an outlet at the railway and uses the Waitomo County roads. It is probable this district will be included in the Otorohanga riding and contribute rates to the county by which it is served in the matter of roads. The extension of the Te Kuiti riding is also a matter for consideration in view of the fact that the interests of the town have been considerably enlarged, and the portion of the county which serves as environment to the centre has extended to a much greater degree | than was the case a few years ago. Minor alterations will also doubtless be necessary in view of increased settlement, and more definite settling of the interesta of the various localities. The Te Mapara settlement which is at present in the Aria riding finds its outlet on the main road, and towards Pio Pio, and will doubtless bo included in the Paemako riding, while somewhat similar adjust-. ments will no doubt be found desirable in other ridings. The Council is to be commended for taking the matter into consideration, for upon the reasonable and equitable distribution of responsibility as far as the ri'.lin;; members are concerned depends ii» i i:»r,!.'.£> extern the smooth workin;; of the local government machin-

The many old customers of Mrs Petheriek will no doubt ex ton a to her a share of support. Customers from the back country will receive a hearty welcome and orders posted by return mail.

A poll of ratepayers in the borough of Te Kuiti on the proposal to adopt the system of rating on the unimproved value will be held on Monday, September 29th. Nominations for the position of councillor on the Waitomo County Council, rendered vacant bv the resignation of Mr W. J. Hoffman, who has represented Te Rauamoa riding ever since the coming into operation of the county, will he received until noon on Thursday, October 2nd. The construction of the dam in connection with the Te Kuitii water supply iB to be pushed ahead at the earliest, possible time. The money for the work has been made available by the borough obtaining the additional ten per cent, on the original loan from'the Government, and when the dam is completed the danger of a water famine in the borough should be very remote. The approach of the working season as far as the roads of the district are concerned is indicated by the calling of tenders for various works. The Waitomo County Council is inviting tenders for the supply of a quantity of shingle for the Otorohanga-Hauturu road and the Kaitieke County Council is calling for tenders for re-forming and metalling of over lour miles of the Kaitieke road.
