Newton King reports — At Rahotu on the 9th inst., owing to the meeting of West Coast leaseholders at Opunake, I had only a small entry and attendance. Yearling steers made £2 lfis 6d, yearling heifers £2 63 to £3 3s, Holstein bull £7 ss, weedy yearlings 10s to 235, aged cowa £2 3s, store cows £3 10s to £5 7?, empty heifers £4 Is to £4 8s 6d, springing heifers £5 7s 6d, weaner pigs 12s 6d. At Stratford on the same day for my Weekly spring heifers sale, 1 had a good demand for good quality heifers, which sold at from £6 to £9 sa, small or backward £4 12s 6d to £5 10s, guaranteed cows £4 to £7. We held our monthly sale in these yards on Friday, 12th inst., when we yarded 342 head of cattle, also sheep and pigs and sundries. There was a good attendance of buyers and all lines sold well with the exception of dairy stock, which were dull of sale. TE AWAMUTU STOCK SALE. We held our monthly sale in the Te Awarnutu yards on 13th inst., when we yarded 430 head of store cattle and 226 head of dairy stock, also pigs, etc. There was a large attendance of buyers and all lines of store stock sold well. Dairy stock' were dull of sale. We quote —Fat bullocks £8 5s to £9, forward conditioned three year bullocks £7 7s 6d, fat cows £6 5a to £7 12s 6d, fat heifers £4 17a 6d to £6 10s, forward empty cows £4 2s to £4 16s, store cows £3 5s to £3 17s 6d, cows with calves £4 2b 6d to £5, two year steers £4 4a to £5, eighteen month empty heifers £3 5s to £3 19s, best yearling steers £3 4s to £3 18s, best yearling heifers £2 18s to £3 ss, good yearlingß £2 12s to £3, small yearlings 30s to 425, dairy cows £5 10s to £7 ss, dairy heifers, best £5 10s to £8 ss, dairy heifers, backward and poor £3 15s to £4 10s, slips 23s to 245, weaners lis to 18s, sows in pig £3 3s to £3 10s. A choice line of yearling steers from M. Corcoran, Harapepe, made £3 18s. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM. Wellington, Monday. The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, September 13th, is as follows, quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot — Mutton. —The market is firm, and prices continue to advance, owing to River Plate and Australian mutton being in small supply. Canterbury 4Sd, heavyweight 4Jd; North Island 4|d, ewes 4d. Lamb. —The market is dull, but prices are firm on account of holders not being anxious to sell. Canterbury two's 5 11-16 d, heavwyeight fours 5Jd; other than Canterbury sg d. Beef.—The market is firm, with good demand for hindquarters. New Zealand hinds 4 31-(Jd, fores 3d ; chilled hinds 4|d, fores 3d. Butter. —The market i 9 firm, with a good" demand for choicest, but poor for low grades. The market has been unfavourably affected by large quantities at present in store for some time past. Choicest Danish has been quoted at 130s to 131s, French 3 aos to Ills, Dutch 110s to 114s, Australian 101s to IK.ls, Siberian 100s to 104 s.
Cheese. —The market is firm, and prices are rising for Canadian and English. It is expected that prices will advance for English. New Zealand stocks ars almost exhausted. Canadian r.ijs to 675, New Zealand 6fcs normal, English Cheddar 70s to 80s.
Hemp. —The raarkst is depressed. Reports from Manila indicate that dealers are holding for better prices than are obtainable here. The demand for hem]) on ?pot is good. Fair current Manila £3l, October to December £3O ss. The output from Manila for the week was 15,000 bales. The New Zealand market continues dull, in sympathy with Manila. New Zealand good fair grade £ : 10, fair £2t> 10s; October to December good fair £3O. Business has been done in fair grade this week at X2» ss. Sellers are asking £25 J os. Thn Sisal market is disturbed, the political situation in Mexico having depressed the market. The present tendency is downward. Price in New York i 3 5J cents., equal to £2O per ton c.i.f. Europe. Wool. —The market is quiet, but firm, though new business is not very large,
