THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.
OPERATIONS IN THE DISTRICT. PROSPECTS FOR THE SEASON. The Te Kuiti dairy factory, which commenced operations fur the season in the middle of August, ia dealing with a fair amount of cream already, and supplies are steadily increasing. By the end of September the supply should be well up to the * average of last season, and when the back block supplies come in from Tangitu, Waitomo and other districts, a record quantity is anticipated. The mild weather conditions which ruled during August were all in favour of the dairying industry. The winter food supplies for cows proved ample, and the roads were hardly so bad as usual in the out districts. However, the chief supply of cream being received at present ia coming from the plaoes in fairly close touch with the railway, acd it will probably be «omc littie tisee before the farther oat settlers are in a position to contribute. The additional plant for the faetory in the chape of an extra churn and pasteuriser has been in* stalled and other improvement! effected, giving additional facilities for handling io an increased supply. <d far this season's output has been absorbed locally and with the demand v
keeping up well it appears as though the local trade will be considerably enlarged during the present season. The outback factories are also, in running order, Pio Pio and Aia having decided to start operations at the beginning of September. Both factories have made additions to thsir equipment in view of an increased supply, and the prospects for the season are of the brightest description. With more country being brought in each season in a decided improvement in the local roads the factories must receive a largely increased supply each year. A gratifying feature in connection with the industry is the desire being manifested in the direction of improving the herds and the culling process ia being followed by all suppliers, while many are securing highly bred aniroalß in order to raise herdß of their own up to a good standard. Everything considered it is not too much to say that the anticipations of those who have advocated dairying in the district are in a fair way of being fulfilled.
