ARGENTINE BEEF TRADE.
It has been noted for some time past that the shipments of beef from the Argentine have been steadily increasing, and this week the supplies arriving and on passage are so heavy (says the Live Stock Journal of May 9th) that prices have declined at the London Central Meat Market, the reduction being about Id per pound. The prices on Tuesday were 2s 8d to 3s 2d per stone for hindquarters, against 3s 4d to 4e lOd per stone at the corresponding date last year, and 2s to 2s 2d against 2s 4d to 2s 8d per stone for forequarters. The shippments during the last four weeks have been exceptionally heavy, both of chilled and frozen beef, but particularly the latter. A variety of causes are given for the sudden increase of shipments, but it is hoped that the trade will sonn fall into normal conditions. The general view is that the organsation of the shipping trade is not working smoothly as regards the proportional quantities to be shipped. It is thought that the oer supply and consequent reduction of Argentine beef prices will only continue for a short time. From the Trade and Navigation returns it appears that for the four months ended April 30th the quantity cf chilled beef landed from the Argentine was 1,345,843cwt., against 1,177,439cwfc. last year, and of frozen beef 996,699cwt., against The quantity of beef on passage from th<- Argentine at present is very large. It .may be added that home-killed beef continues firm.
