EVIDENCE AGAINST WARDER

In the case against Warder Chapman, charged with the murder of Charles McMeekin, Charles Sykep. night attendant at Sunnyside Asylum, gave evidence that when relieving Chapman on the night of July Sth, Chapman told him not to go to McKeekin's cell alone. The best thing to do was for one to hold McMeekin's hands behind his back and the other to hit him in the stomach with hi* fists. In conversation with witness Chapman once said "the best thing to do with some of these eld men was to put your heel i ito their guts, 33 they did not want such cattle there." After further evidence, the change was reduced to one of manslaughter.
Accused was committed for trial. Bail was allowed, accused in £3(JO and two sureties each of £l5O.
