THE P. AND O. BOATS.
- « WHY THEY ARE TO BE STOPPED
The chairman of the Auckland Harbou? Board has received a reply to his cable regarding the continuance of the P. and O. service to Auckland to this effect: —"We have decided reluctantly to suspend our direct connection with Auckland port for the present because of its drawbacks to our Australian work."
This reply has confirmed the fears that were expressed as to the intentions of the P. and O. Ccmpany, and Mr Gunson immediately cabled an answer to the chairman of the company:—
"Decision occasions deep general regret, and is looked upon as a distinct loss to the Dominion. Quite understand the drawback to Australian work, yet trust some rearrangement can be made, and for reasons urged in my previous message beg you to reconsider and see the way clear to renew the service. The present and futare prospects fully warrant the continuance of the service." In connection with this matter there is a very general feeling that the suspension of the P. and 0. ser vice to Auckland will be a very great loss to the Dominion. The position will be discus3ed at the next meetJng of the Chamber of Commerce.
