ENGINEER'S REPORT. I beg to report isp.sn the works under the charge: of your council since your last meeting as follows: Potaka Road: Mr Lewis ha 3 now completed a distance of about 11 | miles which includes the worst portions of this road. Totoro Road: About miles of metalling has now been completed by Messrs Hickson and West on this road. —'Kohua Road: An engineering survey for widening the present read to 14ft was made during the month and plana of the work are now being prepared. Oniao Road: Plana of a small bridge required over the Pake a tea stream on this road are now being prepared.—Miroahuiao to Matiere: Plans and specifications of a metalling contract, including a lew oi the worst places between Pio I'io anfl the Wairere bridge, a total distance or 501 chain?, have been prepared and tenders invited for the work.---Miroa-huiao to frlsngaotaki: Owing to the road cutting up Mr McDonald will be unable to complete his metal cartage contract until the coming spring. In the meantime he is carrying oat his earthwork contract near - the Mangaotaki bridge. Since last meeting plans have been prepared of three stone culverts on this road for wlych work tenders are now advertised. Arapae Road: The metalling of the pirtion of this road between Rothery 'a and Ormaby's contracts which is being carried out by (Jay labour is now practically completed. With regard to the complaint made at the last meeting of your council in reference to the work being done by Mr Innus on this road. I have to report that Mr Donaldson, the Public Work engineer, and myself inspected the work,the result of which ia embodied in Mr Donaldon's memo, of Ist inst. The contractor is now hand napping the metal to the specified gauga and attending to other necessary work as far a? his contract is concerned. Pungarehu Road: Specifications have been approved by the Public Worka Department, for culverting a further portion of this road, the cost of which will be paid out of the road grant.—To Kuiti-Awakino: Mr Naylor has completed bis contract for carting apawlß to repair this road between the 1 and 5-mile pegs. A total quantity of 209 cubic yardß was carted and deposited where required. The spawls fcre now being hand napped and spread on the worst places. —Rotokotuku Road: An' engineering survey has been made and plans prepared for a mile of dray road formation on this road. Tenders for forming and culverting a distance of SO chains are now being advertised. — .VTanguorino Road: Plans and specifications for metalling a distance of 3 miles 64 chains of this road have been prepared and submitted to the Public Works Department for approval.—Aharoaßoad: In reference to the deviation of a portion of this road, which a number of settlefs living along it asked should be made, I am informed that the Public Workß 'Department have gone thoroughly into the matter, but from an engineering point of view it is not advisable. —Waipa Bridge: Messrs Scott and Forsyth are now getting their plant and staging into position preparatory to starting the construction an erection of the bridge. —Haogatiki-Waitomo: Mr Lavvson is now quarrying and preparing to finish his contract early in the coming season.—Caves Road: Arrangements have b«en made with Messrs Ryan Bros, to complete the contract situ tad by Mr Powell on this road. At the next -ret up of the crusher, 1 propose to arrange with the contractor to blind the metal carved from it with nsreening?.-—General: The f.hirus accrued on the various roads in the i:ounty, to March 31st last, have now been properly scheduled and brought ■ip-to-date. The total number of roads dealt w«ith was S9. Estimates for several proposed loans for metaling, were prepared 'during the month. 1 would suggest that in view jf the amount of work necessary for the upkeep of the roads in ihe vicinity of Waitomo that a permanent surfaceman be appointed, am! aiso another in the vicinity of iviairoa: ihi3 would be more satisfactory and less costly than the present system of casual labour. I might state that 1 met Mr Budge in reference to the dftiry factory direciova' request to erect a verandah on the creamery at Kio Kio. The proposed addition will not affect or bo detrimental to the full use of ihe road in any way, and would recommend that their request be granted.— JD. R. GOULD, Engineer.
