Australia, for the championships of tho world and of England, was rowed on tho Thamef course, from Putney to Mot flake, today. The weather w/ih line, but a moderate head wind was blowing off the Midldesex shore, and the water wan rough at tho start at Putney to Hammersmith. Tho towing path was a mass of people, the crowd being larger than that which witnessed the ArnettBarry race. The two sculler* got away well logethe. and from the start Pearco wan the first to tako the lead, striking at ;i2 to the minute to Barry's 'SO. Pearce. who was driving his sou!Jo in deep, led by a quarter of a length at Craven Steps. BARRY'S NARROW ESCAPE. While making his eighth rtroke Barry nearly lost his ncull, and dropped back a little, hut when ho recovered he rowed with machine-like regularity. Pcarce was a quarter o(' a length to the good when tho first mile, post wan passed, and a fine race ensued to Hnrrod's. whore Barry gradually crept up. They shot Hammersmith Bridge with Barry half a length ahead, and soon after Pcarcc became distressed. He lost his form, and used his arms too much, while Barry, with a steady rhythmical swing', drew ahead. Thence the race home was merely a procossion. Barry slowed down and paddled home a winner by two lengths in 22m 2',l 2-.'>s.

Pearce rowed pluckiiy. hut was no match for the winner. Although outcla ased. lie never reaped lo persevere, and his brave effort wan loudly cheered.
