TE KUITI DEBATING SOCIETY.
The usual sitting of Parliament under the auspices of the Te Kuiti Debating Society was hold on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance of members and a highly interesting debate took place on the Legislative Council Amendment Bill. The Bill, which was in charge of the Hon. Mr lnder, provided for the establishingof a Legislative Council, partly by flection and partly by appointment. The elected half were fcto be returned on a restricted franchise while of the appointed members half were to be nominated by the Government and half by the local bodies. In the absence of Mr J. B. Young, the Labour party was led by Mr Langßtone, who was ably supported by Messrs Turner, Gates, and Robinson. For the Government;, Messrs lnder, Ellison, Kirkwood and Howarth made a good caße, and the Bill was passed through all its stageß. Next Thursday evening an open debate will be be held the subject being "Has Industrial Unionism been in the best interests of the community in New Zealand?" Mr F. Langstono will take the affirmative and Mr A. E. Robinson the negative. A threat amouni, of interest is already being focussed on the breach of promise case which is to bo tried under the auspices of the To Kuiti Debating Society, on July 17th. It is stated the plaintiff is in possession of a great amount of correspodence from the defendant, the reading of which should afford ample entertainment to the public.
