IMPROVED FARM SETTLEMENTS.
ROAD WORK IN WINTER. The following letter received by Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, on the subject of road work for settlers in Rangitoto, Tangitu, and Mapara districts will be of interest to the various districts mentioned: — Sir,—ln reply to your letter of the 11th inst., with reference to providing work for struggling Bottlers on improved farm setlements' in Rangitoto, Mapara, and Tangitu, I have to inform you that the sum of £706 was authorised to the Public Works Department Engineer for expenditure on the roads in Mapara settlement on the 31st March last. This money was authorised for improving the road access already provided, and no doubt the settlers will be able to obtain work if they apply to the Engineer-in-Charge, Te Kuiti. Laying of the tramway will be continued to the top of the hill, and work can be found for settlers in cutting timber for corduroying and sleepers for the tramway. It is very difficult to provide work for these settlers, as most of them object to working any great distance from their homesteads, and it i 3 not always convenient to provide work so that they can return home night. However, lam sure the authority already issued, and the works now in progress, will be of great assistance to any of the settlers who are in need, and I am bringing your request before the Public Works Deparment with a view to having work provided for the aettlers as you request. —I have the honour to be, Sir, your obedient servant, W. F. MASSEY.
