The strike of the Timaru waterside workers in sympahy with the Smithfield slaughtermen resulted in the steamers Zealandic and Storm being loaded by free labour from the adjacent farms. At a subßequentgmeeting under the auspices of the Far. mars' Union, the chairman said the time had come to put an end to an intolerable position in respect to atrikes and he urged the farmers and business people to combine to provide a remeay. Many of tho3e present signed an agreement stating their willingness to work the port whenever called upon to do so.
