SUBURBAN SETTLEMENT.
HOMES FOR COUNTRY WORKERS Speaking on a deputation to the Prime Minister at Te Kuiti, Mr J. R. Graham strongly advocated the taking of Pukenui 2 T block by the Government for the purpose of subdividing the property into small holdings. He pointed out the suitability of portion of the property for workmen' 3 homes, and dwelt upon the -necessity of making provision for attracting suitable workmen to country towns. The remainder of the property was eminently adapted for small dairy farms, which would be readily disposed of at any reasonable price. The speaker also ureed that a suitable area should be set aside as a recreation ground for the borough, pointing 1 out that the town had been laid off without any such provision having been made. There were no reserves or endowments of any description in the town and the lack of these public requirements Would be severely felt as tho town increased in population. The whole scheme would be a highly payable proposition to the Government, even allowing for the recreation ground. Mr Massey, in reply, said the Government would be prepared to purchase the property providing the land and price were suitable. He agreed with what had been eaid concerning tho small holdings for workers and areas of from five to twenty-five acres would give the small man an opportunity to |et on his feet. He could not promise the recreation ground, but there might be some reasonable scheme by which the town could acquire tho area on equitable terms. He promised to send w officer to inspect and report on the whole matter.
