OTIRA TUNNEL.
ALARMIST RUMOURS ANSWERED.
Disquieting rumours about water difficulties in the Otira Tunnel have beerij published in the South Island. It has been suggested, among other things, that at the Bealey end so much water has been entering the tunnel that the pumps could not control, and excavatings from that end have had to stop. A general slackening of the pace was also alleged. To all these statements the Public Works engineers give a flat denial. A good deal of surface water got in during rainstorm recently, but it did not overwhelm the pumps, nor is there any indication of trouble of that kind. There has been no change in the position, except that instead of slowing down, the department is taking on every capable workman it can get, and there are still places for them.
