FLOODS IN THE SOUTH.
LUMSDEN TOWNSHIP INUNDATED.

It has been raining heavily in this district for the last 24 hours, li inchos having fallen. Rivers are all in high flood. At Lumsden the Oreti river overflowed and entered the town, causing the highest flood since the big flood of 1878. All tourist, traflic to Cold Lakes in cut off. Three washouts on the railway;* between Lumsden and Kingston Will stop all trains. All the .sluicing companies have stopped work, and have been compelled to turn the water out of the races. Much of the crop is still in the paddocks, and tho outlook for farmers is very serious. A young man namod ,T. Walsh, who was driving with two brothers named Dickson, at Hokonui, near Winton, was drowned through tho trap falling into the Otapiri river. The brothers managed to reach a small island, where they were marooned for some hours. Tinmru, This Day. Mt. Cook hermitage roports that ten inches of rain wore; recorded in 22 hours. Tourists at the hole) are preparing to i take tents on to higher ground. Dunedin, This Day. Yesterday's storm carried away the Waipori fluming, which means that the city lighting will be extinguished to-night, as the reserve plant is needed for providing power for the electric tram system.
