STRATFORD-MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY
♦♦♦# PROGRESS OF WORK. In connection with the meeting of settlers held at Niho Niho, Ohura, on Saturday last at whish a more active policy on the part of the Government was strongly urged, Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, states that the figures available show that the amount of £92,000 was voted for the line last session. Of this amount the sum of £91,000 had been spent up to the end of February. There was still a month before the end of the financial year, and the whole of the vote would be absorbed by that time. Tenders had been called for the tunnel near Okahukara, and for one and a half miles of formation on either side of the tunnel. There had been some delay in pushing the formation work at the northern end, but this had been is it was necessary to . push through the service road to the eleven mile peg. This service road was now completed and metalled, and shortened the distance from the Main Trunk line to Ohura hy six miles, which was a great benefit to the settlers. The necessity for pushing on with the tunnel is apparent as the construction of the line beyond the tunnel will be delayed until tunnelling operations are completed. At the present time there are eighty men employed on the works at the Okahukara end and the workshould progress satisfactorily.
