UNIVERSITY BOAT RAGE.
WON BY OXFORD. London, Thursday. The annual 'varsity boat race between Oxford and Cambridge was rowed on the Thames to-day, and was won by Oxford by three quarters of a length, Cambridge won the toaa and chose the Surrey side. The weather was fine, with a light following wind.
The smooth water favoured Cambridge, who were quickest away, and were clear at a mile,
They were a length ahead at Hammersmith, and a length and a-half at Chiswick.
Oxford then spurted and reduced the lead to half a length at Barnes Bridge.
Cambridge maintained this advantage till a quarter of a mile from the finish, when Oxford made an effort which will be memorable in boat racing annals. The crew, putting immense power into their work, crept up inch by inch. Cambridge did not respond to the calls for a spurt but led to within ir>o yards of the finish, where Oxford came up hand over hand and won a magnificently fought race by threequarters of a length in 20 minutes !>3 seconds.
