FOUNDATIONS LAID AT CANBERRA. BIRTH OP A GREAT CITY. i Sydney, Thursday. The ceremony of laying the foundation stones of the Federal column at the Australian capital, Canberra, and the christening of the new city, took place yesterday. The weather was fine, and there was a large and representative gathering. There was a great display of bunting and a hno military display added to the military effect. * Special trains conveyed many prominent citizens and a strong Parliamentary party from Sydney to Queanbeyan. They thence motored to the Bite of the capital. The ceremonies were of an impressive character, and there was much enthusiasm. The first foundation stone was laid by the Governor-General, Lord Dentiian ; the second by the Prime Minister, Mr Fisher; and the third by Mr King O'Malley, Minister for Home Affairs; each used a trowel or. Australian gold, made by Australian workmen, and ornamented by typical Australian flowers.
