The Ohura Sheep Dog Trial Club is to hold its second annual trials at Ohura on March 19tb and 20th. when prize money to the value of about £4O will be distributed. Sir Thomas Lipton has issued a challenge for the American Cup in accordance with the deed of gift. Charles Nicholson, of Gosport, will be the builder of the new yacht, which will be named Shamrock IV. Mr All Michell, for the past few years with Mr W. McColl, Te Kuiti, has decided to open out on bis own account as a hairdresser and tobacconist in Te Kuiti in the premises occupied by Mr C. Boles (who is removing toßlackman and Cobb's building), will be renovated and strict attention to business, and the requirements of customers, wiH be the motto of Mr Michell. Next Friday evening at the Empress Theatre there will be a complimentary performance in aid of the Pio Pio medical fund. The residents of Te Kuiti will be assisting in a worthy object by supporting the entertainment. A good programme has been arranged. A return has been issued by tee Government which shows that during the last financial year the tax paid for totalisator licenses totalled £75,611 15s lOd. The Auckland Racing Club heads the list with £9502 6s lOd, followed by the Canterbury Jockey Club with £8046 6s 9d. I A few months ago the Hawera Acclimatisation Society tried the experiment of hatching pheasants' eggs, but it was not altogether successful. Those pat in the incubator did not [thrive, but the chicks brought out by »i hen are doing well. It is proposed [o obtain another gross of eggs and to let them under hens, with one or two liens' eggs thrown in. The annual report of the London Cancer Hospital shows that the year's work has been marked by enormously increased usefulness, mainly due to the new radio-therapeutic department. Intending consumers of electriciy from tthe borough will be interested to know that the council will bring the cables from the mains to [the consumer's terminals, provided the distance does not exceed sixty-six feet. All length in excess of the sixty six feet will have to be laid at the expense of the consumer. On the recommendation of th 9 ElectrV Light Committee the borough council on Monday evening decided that Mr Crookes, engineer in charge of the electrical installation be authorised to advertise on behalf of the council for an electrical engineer at a salary of £2OO and an assistant at £IOO per annum. In view of the increased work devolving upon the town clerk in consequence of the installation of the electric light service the borough, council resolved to increase that officer's salary by £25 per year, the amount to be deducted bited to the electric light account. for providing several more fire plugs in the borough to enable the watering of the streets to be carried out thoroughly has been brought before the borough council, and the engineer has been authorised to place extra fire plugs in Rora and Taupiri streets. A cricket match of some local interest is to take place on the Domain on Saturday commencing- at 2.30, between Smokers and Non-smokers. A splendid assortment of dress material wil! always be on hand to select from, and the reputation enjoyed by Misa Mclndoe amongst her customers in Auckland for excellence of workmanship will be maintained in Te Kuiti. Miss Mclndoe will be pleased to receive any vistiors at her place of business. In connection with th 9 forthcoming visit of the Hon. W. H. Herries to Te Kuiti, it was hoped the Minister would be able to arrive at Te Kuiti by the 2 o'clock train on the morning of March 19th, and spend the day in the locality. A telegram has been received from Mr Herries by the secretary of the committee, Mr F. E. Lamb, to the effect that as the Minister will not arrive in] Auckland from hiß northern tour until 10 o'clock on the night of March 18th, he cannot leave for Te Kuiti until the 10 a.m. train from Auckland on the 19th. Mr Herries will therefore arrive at le Kuiti at 4 p.m. and

leave for Taumarunui by the 11.40 a.m. train on March 20th.

At a meeting of directors of the Te Kuiti Dairy Company, held yesterday, a resolution was passed conveying the hearty thanks of the company to Mr C. Boles for the manner in which he stopped the runaway horses attached to the waggon and thereby averted what would probably have been a serious accident.

The supply of cream to che Te Kuiti dairy factory is keeping up wonderfully well, and the quality of the output is such that it probably constitutes a record for butter manufactured from home separated cream. The last grade note obtained by the factory was 94, which is a high tribute to the quality of article being turned out by the manager, Mr H. Boscawen. . Next Sunday special Easter services will be held in the local Presbyterian Church. The Rev. A. Armstrong will preach, taking for his subjects "The Transfiguration of Peace" and "The Call of Pilate to the Crowd," morning and evening respectively. The

"Te Deum" will be rendered, and the first-class anthem ' : King uf Kings" by the chruch's choirs. All are heartily invited to attend. At the close of the evening service a retiring offering will be taken up to assist in the matter of providing a large marquee to be fitted up with games, magazines, and writing material for the use of Territorials going into camp next month from this district. Such marquees are much needed by the men, and receive high praise from officers and chaplains. Donations will be thankfully received by the Rev. A. Armstrong or his church officers.
